65-year old Nigerian Grandma arrested with cocaine

A 65-year old grandmother, who is also a mother of six, was on Wednesday arrested for alleged drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said Thursday.
NDLEA said the suspect, Hassan Fatimat Abike, was to board a British Airways plane at the Murtala Muhammed international airport in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, when she was arrested with substances suspected to be cocaine.

“Every arrangement appeared to have been made for a 65-year old grandmother to smuggle 1.740kg of cocaine into London in herbal syrup,” said Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA Head of Public Affaits.

“It was not her fist time of going to London and the drug was cleverly packed to avoid detection. It was packed in balloons and inserted in ten plastic containers of herbal syrup,” Ofoyeju said.

He quoted the Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, as saying that the suspect had two international passports that bear Hassan Fatimat Abike.

 The 77 year old President of Uruguay, José Mujica is officially the world's poorest and most generous president,not because he cant be richer,but because he donates 90%  of his earnings to charity.

Cynthia: Court grants two suspects bail, remands driver

A Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday granted bail to two suspects arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Cynthia Osokogu,
But the driver who was accused of driving the prime suspect to Cosmilla Hotel, FESTAC, was remanded in prison custody.
The suspects granted bail – Nonso Ezike (22), who is the younger brother to Olisaeloka, one of the alleged killers, and Ezeaka Chinonso (27) – were arrested by policemen at Area E for receiving and selling Cynthia’s BlackBerry phone.
The two counts read, “That you Ezike Nonso Ifechukwu and Ezeaka Chinonso, sometime in the month of July 2012, at 93 Tedi/Memo Road Abule-Osun, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: receiving robbed/stolen property thereby committed an offence and punishable under Section 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
“That you (accused persons), on the same date, time did knowingly receive one white BlackBerry phone valued at N85,000 from one Ezike Olisaeloka also known as Chidera, property of Cytnhia, knowing same to have been robbed/stolen and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 326 (1)(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
Nonso’s lawyer, Mr. J. C Ngobili, told the court that the accused was a student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and prayed the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya, admitted that although the offences were bailable, he pointed out that the bail condition ought not to be too liberal in view of the circumstances surrounding Cynthia’s murder.

Gunmen attack students of UNIJOS

Two gun men yesterday invaded the University of Jos opening fire on unsuspecting students. Two 100level female students were seriously injured, but no student was killed.

Students who witnessed the random and senseless shooting pursued and killed one of the attackers while the other one was rescued by police before the students could also kill him. Police discovered a gun with three live cartridges with the surviving attacker.

The police is yet to say who the men were and why they shot at students of the school.

Man arrested for throwing burning stove on wife

A middle-aged man identified as Oladimeji Fowowe has been arrested by the police at Iju police station Station Red House, Lagos, for allegedly setting his wife on fire, when he threw a burning stove and hot water on her.
The suspect, who trailed his wife to Ijoko in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria where she had gone to assist her husband’s younger brother’s wife who had just put to bed a set of twins, was alleged to have committed the crime when his wife returned to Iju area of Ishaga, Lagos State from Ijoko
Speaking with P.M.NEWS on her hospital bed at Ogba, Lagos State, the victim, Mrs. Oluwakemi Fowowe, said she left her husband and father of her three children, when his trouble and that of his mother became unbearable for her.

“I was at the passage facing outside not knowing that my husband had sneaked through the back door and the next thing I heard was a loud noise as he threw both the burning stove and a pot of hot water on me.

“My body caught fire and I ran outside, shouting for help before people assisted me in putting out the fire. I became unconscious before I was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors battled to revive me. I want all well-meaning Nigerians to come to my aid as I have no one to help me,’’she moaned in pains

WONDERS: 28 year-old woman steals baby during night vigil

Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku have investigated the case of a 28-year-old lady, Ms Kemi Adeoye, who was arrested by policemen from Sanyo Division for stealing a baby in a church during a vigil service on Friday September 7, 2012.

The lady, according to police sources, had attended a church service on the fateful day and had picked a baby where she had been laid while her mother was praying in front of the altar.

Former IG of Police, Ehindero goes to jail...

Former IG of police, Tafa Balogun (2002 - 2005) was arrested and jailed for six months in 2005 on charges involving about N13 billion obtained through money laundering, theft and other sources. In 2012, another IG of police, Sunday Ehindero (2005 - 2007) has been arrested and remanded in Kuje Prisons for embezzling N16 million and misappropriating over N500 million belonging to the Police Force while he was at the helm of affairs at the Force Headquarters.

The prosecutor, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other related offences commission(ICPC) said the money was the interest that accrued to over  N500 million donated to the police, for the procurement of arms, ammunition and riot control equipment, by the Bayelsa State Government. He says he's not guilty.

3 aides killed in Nasarawa State Governor’s convoy fatal auto crash

The convoy of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, was involved in a fatal accident yesterday evening along the Nasarawa-Tooto highway road. The unfortunate incident left 3 political aides of the governor dead.

The accident which occurred around 5pm yesterday involved a government Toyota Hilux and a truck. Three occupants in the Hilux car, including the governor's personal assistant, who is also his nephew, died on the spot.

Suspected cultists gun down father of two in Makurdi

The rising incidents of cult related violence in parts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, yesterday claimed the life of a 27 year old father of two who was hacked to death by suspected cultists, at Ankpa quarters area of the town.According to eye witnesses, the deceased who was identified as Simon John had retired home after the day’s business when suddenly someone called him out of his house for a brief discussion only to be surrounded by cutlass and guns wielding men numbering about 30.

The gang allegedly butchered the young man leaving him in the pool of his blood whilst people in the neighborhood scampered to safety for fear of being caught in the cross fire. According to his wife, Mrs Abigail John said, “I went to buy some household items my husband sent me only to be called on phone by a neighbour that my husband has been attacked by some unidentified young men.

”I ran back to the house only to discover the lifeless body of my husband”, she added.

Also speaking, elder brother of the deceased, Chia said after his brother was called out by somebody, all they heard was sporadic gun shots which created fear among the people of the area.

Aviation minister threatens to sue Arik Air

Oduah, has threatened to institute a legal action against Arik Air, for levelling unfounded allegations against her.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, by Mr Joe Obi, Special Assistant (media) to the minister. .

It stated that a recent publication by the management of the airline was designed to embarrass the minister.

It said that Arik Air was owing the ministry N85.4 billion and stressed that Oduah had no stake in the company.

The release stated that the minister could not have contemplated acquiring a stake in any airline and cautioned that the time was ripe for Arik Air to change its business module to resolve its financial crisis.

It would be recalled that Arik Air was prevented from operation since Thursday by labour unions of the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria, FAAN. (NAN)

This hausa 'chicken' seller was caught trapping vultures in Onne, Port Harcourt, roasting and selling them as suya meat to unsuspecting buyers.

He said he started out selling real chicken but when it became too expensive, he started trapping vultures and selling to his customers as chicken. Only God  will help us.

Mikel Obi deletes twitter account after racist abuse; Chelsea calls police

Mikel Obi yesterday deleted his Twitter account after he was racially abused for 'costing' Chelsea victory in the opening match of their Champions League defence against Juventus Wednesday Sept. 19th.

The match ended 2-2 and Chelsea fans blamed Mikel for giving the ball away just ten minutes before time and also not preventing the equalizing goal. After the end of the game, Chelsea fans racially abused Mikel on his Twitter account @Mikel12Official, prompting the Super Eagles midfielder to delete the account which he set up just a few months back.

Chelsea said they have informed the police after being made aware of the racist Tweets. A statement read:

" We've been made aware of racist tweets targeted at Mikel which are totally unacceptable, disgusting and abhorrent. We've informed the police and support taking the strongest possible action."

No More Re-Sit Exams & Summer School in Universiti​es – NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC), the body charged with the responsibility of monitoring the activities of universities in the country, has banned the conduct of re-sit examinations in Nigerian universities.
The NUC, in a statement by its Chief Information Officer, Mrs Bukola Olatunji, in Abuja, on Wednesday, frowned on the discovery that some universities conduct supplementary examination for their students, in addition to regular semester examinations.
The commission therefore warned that the conduct of such examinations was in violation of extant rules and regulations, and urged all universities involved to stop the practice henceforth or face sanction.
In her words, "The attention of the NUC has been drawn to the fact that some universities conduct supplementary examination for their students, in addition to regular semester examinations…This contradicts the Course Credit System in operation in the Nigerian university system, which has no provision for re-sit or supplementary examinations.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the Course Credit System provides that courses should be taken on semester basis and a course failed in one semester should be carried over to the following year and to be re-taken at the next available opportunity."

A Nollywood actor, Rasaki Olaniyi, 45, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly robbing, Abayomi Arinde, of N2.6 million. Olaniyi of No. 7, Aduke Salako St., Agbado, Lagos, was arraigned on four-count charges of robbery, stealing, conspiracy and impersonation. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutor Sunday Aggoi said that the accused had on Sept. 5 at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, robbed Arinde of N500, 000, $10,000, three gold jewelries valued at N150, 000.

Aggoi said that the accused also unlawfully locked up the complainant in one of the hotel rooms after robbing him. He said that the complainant was robbed of cash and goods totaling N2.6 million. The prosecutor said that the accused was apprehended by the hotel securities following alarm raised by the complainant. Aggoi said that the offences contravened Sections 297, 296, 299, 270 and 378 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The counsel to the accused, Mr Olusegun Ajanaku, urged the court to grant bail to the accused. The Magistrate, Mr Jacob Adegun, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum. Adegun said that the sureties must reside in Lagos State and be employees of the State Government.

The case was adjourned to Oct. 5, for mention.

4. Within 24 hours the offending pictures must be handed over to the Palace
5. Closer would get a 10,000 euro daily fine each time they sell them on or publish them
6. They will receive the same fine if they don't hand over all images by midday tomorrow
7. Legal fees of 2,000 euros handed to the Duke and Duchess

Prosecutors are now considering whether there are grounds for criminal charges

Actor Jailed in Abuja for Being Gay

A 28-year old actor, Bestwood Chukwuemeka was on Monday sentenced to three-month imprisonment by a Magistrate Court in Abuja for having sexual intercourse with another man through the anus.

At first he pleaded not guilty before accepting the crime. In his words; ‘’I am guilty of the charge against me. I was under the influence of alcohol and I want the court to temper justice with mercy’’, he said.

The police prosecutor, Mohammed Umar, had told the court that the convict committed the offence in August when the complainant was sleeping in his bed. Homosexual acts, the prosecutor said, was contrary to Section 284 of the Penal Code.

The Senior Magistrate however sentenced him to three months imprisonment without an option of fine.
